COMPRESSION PACKING:
TYPES
OF COMPRESSION PACKING'S:
Compression packing’s are made
in square or rectangular cross section.
Materials:
(a) Vegetable Fiber (Plant fiber like cotton)
(b) Mineral Fiber (Asbestos is the mineral fiber)
(c) Animal Product (Leather)
(d) Synthetic Fiber
(e) Grafoil (flexible graphite)
(f) Metal
Qualities
of Packing’s:
1. Packing should not contain anything that can
be dissolved, swelled or weakened the fluid.
2. Be sufficient elastic to absorb any shaft
vibration.
3. If over tightened possess means of becoming
free without producing destructive friction & heat.
4. Do not corrode the shaft or rod.
5. Lose volume slowly to
require minimum adjustment and renewal.
Metals
Several metallic material
are used for packing
Lead :
It is used in form of foil. It is used up to 450° F.
Copper :
Pure copper is used in the form of wire and foil
Max. Temp. Limit is up
to 1000 ˚F.
Aluminums: Aluminum foil is generally more flexible
than
Copper. This also can
handle up to 1000 ˚F.
Pure Nickel: It is made into foil and used mainly in
valves handling alkalis or steam at temps. Over 1500 ˚ F.
Monel and Inconel: These are used
as wire reinforcement for asbestos yarns in high pressure high temp. steam gas and oil packing’s.
MOLDED PACKING'S:
Type:
1. Lip type
2. Squeeze type
LIP TYPE SEALS: Lip type seals are used for reciprocating
application.
V-Ring packing:
Used in low and high
pressure application.
•
Can be
installed on piston as inside packed and in gland box as outside packed.
•
Installed in
sets with male & female adapters.
•
Split V-rings
are used for easy installation.
