CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS

            The centrifugal pump works on the principle of centrifugal force.It consists of a rotating element including impeller & a shaft and a stationary element made up of a casing, stuffing box.Vanes of impeller impart Kinetic energy to the fluid through centrifugal force.The velocity is converted into pressure by means of volute or set of stationary diffuser vanes surrounding impeller.

Multistage centrifugal pump: A multistage pump is a pump with two or more impellers.

There are two ways of arranging impellers in multistage pump.

(a)    Impeller in series: For high head & constant discharge.

(b)    Impeller in parallel: For high rate of discharge & constant head.

The specific speed of centrifugal pump is defined as the speed at which the pump would deliver one cubic meter per second under a head of 1 meter.

                                              Ns= NQ 1/2/H3/4

      N = Speed  of  the impeller or pump in r.p.m
     Q = discharge of the pump in cubic meter per second.
     H= Head of the pump.
Radial Flow -below 4000
Mixed Flow - 4000 to 9000
Axial Flow- above 9000
